Heat Stroke vs. Heat Exhaustion

What’s the Difference Between Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are heat-related conditions caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Heat exhaustion is less severe but can progress to heat stroke, a medical emergency requiring immediate attention.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion

  • Heavy sweating and clammy skin
  • Weakness, dizziness, or fainting
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Rapid, weak pulse

Symptoms of heat stroke (requires emergency care)

  • High body temperature (103°F or higher)
  • Hot, dry, or damp skin (lack of sweating)
  • Confusion, slurred speech, or unconsciousness
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • Seizures

What to do in each case

  • For heat exhaustion: Move to a cool area, drink fluids, and rest. Seek medical attention if symptoms don’t improve.
  • For heat stroke: Call 911 immediately. Cool the person down with ice packs, shade, or a cool bath while waiting for emergency care.
