Lifetime Reserve Days

What Are Lifetime Reserve Days?

Lifetime reserve days are extra days of hospital coverage provided by Original Medicare if you're hospitalized for more than 90 days in a single benefit period. Medicare grants you 60 of these reserve days to use throughout your lifetime, and once used, they can't be replenished.

Why lifetime reserve days matter

  • Protects against unexpected hospital stays: Lifetime reserve days help cover hospital costs if you're hospitalized longer than anticipated.
  • Limits financial exposure: Although there's a daily coinsurance, these days help reduce the significant expenses that could result from lengthy hospitalizations.
  • One-time benefit: Knowing these days are limited emphasizes the importance of managing hospital stays and planning healthcare carefully.
